The Greene County girls basketball team has an 0-3 record to start the season, but scoring is much improved over last season. During the 2022-23 campaign the Rams scored 30 or more points only three times. Early in this season, the Rams have scored more than 30 points in both of their first two games.
The team played their first game last week, traveling to Woodward-Granger Nov. 21 and falling 54-31.
The Rams trailed 29-12 at the end of the first half, rallying to score nine points in the third quarter and 10 in the fourth, but were unable to close the gap and get ahead of the now 2-0 Woodward-Granger Hawks.
Junior Emma Shipley scored 12 points and had two assists for the Rams, while sophomore Kaycee Pittman scored eight points. Junior Payton Kokenge scored four, and led the team in rebounds with 13, adding three assists and four steals. Freshman Makenna Ebersole grabbed 11 rebounds, one block and one steal, with junior Ella Shipley credited with seven rebounds, one block and three assists.
The Rams traveled to Ogden Nov. 27 and lost 60-37.
They were down only four points, 13-9 after one quarter, but the Bulldogs moved ahead 27-14 at the half. After three quarters they trailed the Bulldogs 44-22, but a strong fourth quarter tightened the Bulldogs’ margin.
Emma Shipley scored 12 points, including four 3-point shots. Kokenge scored 10 points with one tres and three of six free throws. Ebersole scored eight points and led in rebounds with eight. Kokenge led in steals with three.
The Rams hosted the Panorama Panthers Tuesday and lost, 44-11. More stats will follow. `~with Taylor Teays of the Scranton Journal
